“Being gay is in itself a defiant act.”

On April 27, Ms. Patricia Ealdama, the Mass Communication Department Chair, was interviewed to highlight her notable achievements and programs conducted for this year and the upcoming years to come with her being the head.
She makes sure that her tasks are aligned with the Benedictine values and along the school’s vision-mission statement. She caters to the needs of both the students and the faculty. But the main goal is to produce students who are effective communicators especially when they graduate in their field.
To excite and encourage the incoming Mass Communication students, she shares some of the projects and events for the next year. Some of which includes a new approach in teaching since there is a new curriculum provided. Given the context, the learnings would not be limited in a four-cornered area. The approach would be dynamic, innovative, and more engaging to the students. As for the events, she focuses on the mental health of the students before anything else. Career programs will also be conducted so as to help the students be on the right path. She made sure that she incorporated having fun while still learning.
She adds that the Hildegarde Awards would push through next year despite the limited students. Plans have already been made, and the Mass Communication department would still handle it. Perhaps, this would serve as a challenge for both the students and faculty. This would be supported by the Communication Society, Night Secondary School (NSS), the President’s Office, the Institute of Women’s Studies, and the Institute of Social Action Center (ISAC).
She says, “We are fortunate that we are supported by the Scholastican community so definitely, we are going to sustain the Hildegarde Awards.”
In the Mass Communication field, it is necessary that the speaker is able to communicate effectively to the audience. She explained during the interview. “The most important factor for your message to be received by the receiver or the recipient is to know who that person is. You have to understand who your target market is so that even if there are disruptions; even if there will be problems along the way, you’re sure that your message or the way that you communicate will really be effective…”
She willingly sends out her message for future students. “MassComm’s image is a fun course, it’s easy. It is going to be fun. It is easy especially if you’re going to study hard and listen to your professors. But it’s also challenging because we equip you with tools that you will really need in the future, and those tools may not be the easy ones…”
