“CAPTAIN MARVEL”
IS MARVEL’S BLOCKBUSTER LADY
By: Clarisse Buhay Aldana
Marvel Studios just released their newest film that will surely become a game changer in the world of superheroes. This is now the 21st film that involves the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the MCU timeline and it is also the first female-led film. Being a huge fan of Sci-Fi and Marvel, I knew I wouldn’t miss this for the world.
Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Set in the 1990’s, it follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races (known as the Kree and the Skrulls) reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of a maelstrom. The story also revolves around the protagonist’s self-discovery as she tries to make sense of her life. What happened in her past and who she exactly is. The writers used the stereotype of women being too emotional and it’s one of the major issues that Danvers faces in the story. With that, you will sense a vibe of, not just women empowerment, but the word empowerment itself while watching the film. That’s because her gender is not the focus here, but her story, her capabilities, and her identity as Captain Carol “Avenger” Danvers.
The casting director did a great job choosing the perfect actors and actresses for the roles. Brie Larson, who is an academy award-winning actress, was just amazing. She portrayed the role of Carol Danvers very well. There is the character of her not knowing her past and that developing into a completely new person throughout the film. I love her chemistry with Nick Fury, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson. They worked so well together developing a friendship. Now, Fury’s character, that was something new from the authoritative, serious character we’re familiar with. In a nutshell, all the actors did a pretty good job. The kid, however, was lacking emotions and it feels a bit rushed when she throws her lines. Kudos to her though, for already appearing in a Marvel movie at such a young age. That’s some straight up #goals right there.
This movie is action-packed and balanced with humor, creating the perfect atmosphere for a sci-fi story. The concept of the whole film was genius. Without any spoilers, it’s pretty similar to the concept of the Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House. Anyway, the score or the music for the film was fantastic. They used 90’s music in some scenes to really set the tone and everything just went well with the mood. The visuals and graphics of the movie were incredible. The VFX team did such great jobs adding colors and life to the film. The color scheme looked incredible. The film, just like the other Marvel films, remained loyal to the comic books, but also adding the element of realism wherein the audience could relate to. The connection of the film to the MCU timeline is clear, especially to the fans who look at every detail of the frames. With that said, I would give this movie a rating of 4 out of 5. Mainly, because I think that most of the audience that would appreciate the film more are also Marvel fans.
The MCU has been an incredible staple to pop culture for 10 years and it’s been an emotional journey for everyone involved. Captain Marvel is the perfect springboard towards the upcoming Avengers: Endgame. It presents a message that being emotional is not an issue. Emotions are what makes us human and being human is the best thing there is. It also tells us that self-discovery may involve looking back at your past, but what’s more important is who you are in the present and what you can become in the future. Will you create an impact to people the way these actors did? There are people who want the world to be good and do whatever they can to make it so. Those are the heroes we can believe in. Never stop believing in heroes.
