Manila Bay Clean-Up And Progress Reported By Mikaela Cavanna
Bringing back the Glory of Manila Bay
By: Mikaela Cavanna
The Philippines is enriched with wonders, islands, and archipelagos which became tourist spots that people from all over the world travel to come and see. Every place has its story, and each of them has an abundant history to share with the Filipinos.

One of these historical sites is the Manila Bay located around the city capital of the Philippines. Manila Bay Sunset is considered as one of the most beautiful sunsets all over the world, but people fail to appreciate it in the past years due to the foul smell and the unseemly large amount of garbage surrounding the area and forming in the oceans. In 2008, the Supreme Court ordered for Manila Bay's rehabilitation, but instead of giving the government agencies ten years to make it possible, it was only in four months. Years have passed, and the situation of Manila Bay worsens due to the negligence of the government officials together with the irresponsibility and lack of discipline of the families surrounding the bay.

Finally this year, following the successful rehabilitation in Boracay, the agencies who took charge of it stood up to bring back the glory of Manila Bay once again. The cleanup was led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Approximately 5,000 volunteers gathered to make a change and conduct the clean up by picking up the trash which accumulated throughout the years. They have collected 45.59 tons of trash on the first day of the rehabilitation program which took place on the 27th of January. Weekly cleanups are also being conducted to maintain and somehow preserve the progress made. All are welcome to participate which I scheduled from Monday-Saturday at 7:00 am. We, the citizens of this country, should stand together to bring back the beauty of our country.
